What Backpacking Gear Should I Buy First?
Assuming you are in fact, a beginner, it is suggested that you obtain some version of everything on this list today if you don’t already have it. One way or another, to insure an enjoyable journey, these items are all necessary.

What Should I Not Bring Backpacking?
Learning what NOT to bring when trekking the great outdoors is an important and valuable skill in discernment that is best learned by setting out and getting started on your journeys.
There is a saying by the late great Mors Kochanski that gets tossed around the outdoorsman/survival community that often comes to mind;
“The more you know, the less you have to carry…”
Learning some outdoor/bushcraft skills and developing some improvisational instincts can come in handy in helping to reduce your load, simply because you have developed the skills to be more self-reliant and work with what mother nature gives you.
When we are new at backpacking, we tend to “throw in the kitchen sink”. It’s easy to do because we are constantly thinking about “what if” scenarios and it’s natural to want to be prepared out there for unforeseeable events.
You can count on one thing, if you bring too much on a long distance trek, you will almost certainly not soon forget the experience. Anything you can leave behind for your next outing will be left.
However, there are some things that ought not be left behind and that is what we are picking apart today.
How Heavy Should My Backpack Be?
The general rule of thumb is that your fully loaded pack should not weigh any more than 20% of your own body weight. Of course there are a few factors that may alter this rule, as it is just a general guide to help keep the pack at a manageable weight.
The longer the duration of your trek, the more food, water, and other supplies you’ll need to pack, increasing your weight. This doesn’t change the need to try to stick to the general rule of 20%, so you may have to get creative about how and what you pack.
For instance, I know a few guys who will cut the better part of the handle of their toothbrush off just to save that space and those few ounces. This may seem silly to some folks, but guys like these are seasoned pros and they have learned the importance of shaving every inch and ounce possible.
Weather is another factor when it comes to pack weight and space. Cold weather will, without a doubt, have you packing more.
Also, there are some people who are well aware of what they’re adding to their pack, however they choose to take these extra things along to make their camp time a bit more comfortable.
All of this will be learned through your own experiential education by getting out there and doing it.
How Do You Train for a Long Backpacking Trip?
Both strength and endurance training are necessary if you want to have a long and rewarding backpacking trek. A good mix of legs and core, shoulders, back, and arms strength training combined with lengthy cardio is ideal.
Also, squats and deadlift are your friends when it comes to strength training for just about anything. Focus on the areas of the body that will take on the brunt of the load out there.
However, nothing beats throwing on your pack for long day hikes to get you ready for the big game. Getting on out there on some varied terrain will also help you to hone in on your balance, strengthening the ankles and knees.
Backpacking long treks is very demanding. Before you spend a lot of money on all of this gear, we strongly suggest you get just the pack first (keep the receipt). Then fill it with water, food, clothing and some weight to equal about the weight and distribution of what a full pack may be like for you.
Head out on a moderate to easy day hike, maybe up to 5 miles or so round trip. If you find yourself miserable at the end, you either have some conditioning to do, or you must consider whether or not this is something you’re really going to enjoy.
However, don’t give up too quickly. Once you whip yourself into shape a little bit, backpacking overnighters can be very addictive and enjoyable.

SHELTER:

SLEEP:
Unless you live close to the equator, you’re going to want a good sleeping bag and pad. Can you get by without it? The bag, maybe. The pad, probably not.

FIRST AID:
When it comes to first aid we could always get very elaborate. However, for a backpacking excursion, we want our first aid kit to be compact and lightweight while still retaining a high standard and quality. My go to for first aid kits is My Medic.
This company has set the standard for first aid kits and medical supplies. Name your activity or purpose, and they have custom made kits to suit your needs.
Though My Medic offers thoroughly stocked first aid kits and supplies, I always make a list of priority items that I won’t do without and then make a checklist of what’s in the kit. From there, I just add whatever I find is missing.
Another method, which I love, is to just build out your own first aid kit from scratch. That way, you can make every single decision. But, for the purposes of this blog post, it’s hard to beat My Medic for your prefab first aid kit.

WATER:
The most important thing that we can do, no matter where we are or what we are doing, is to make sure we have clean water to drink and stay hydrated. It is something that most of us never have to think about. We turn on the faucet and have an endless supply that is not ideal without filtering, but good enough to drink if we had to.
We can only make it roughly 3 days without water. Running out of good clean drinking water will have you turning around and heading back to civilization fast if you’re smart.
Below, we take a look at ways to go into the field hydrated but without being weighed down. Water is roughly 8.3 lbs. per gallon. It adds up quick.
With a little planning to locate a decent water source along your journey, our choices below will help you to optimize your backpacking experience.

Some folks may be dead set on the bottle as a means of transporting your water. I say, if you can, have both bottle and bladder ready.
Water is heavy, so you have to be careful here to make sure you’re light enough on your feet, as we have at least 10 more items we’re going to be hauling around if we follow this guide.
However, when it comes to hydration, the more prepared you are coming out of the gate, the longer you’ll last until you find another source.
Also, you can utilize the fact that the Klean Kanteen is made of steel and is single walled (non-insulated), which will allow you to boil out bacteria!
Quick and Important note here; NEVER heat and try to boil water out of an insulated steel water bottle. IT WILL EXPLODE!!
Being able to use both the bladder and the bottle here, you’re embarking with 100 oz. of H2O. That’s a good start until you can find more water to gather and filter with our next item.
FOOD:
Food choices should be kept quite simple. Space and weight are big considerations and you should shoot for packing things that require only water or can be eaten straight out of the package.
Notice how we’re showing you options to by things in bulk or boxes of packaged servings. You can save a lot of money doing this and then pick out what you want to take along on each trip, while leaving your cache behind at the house.
I am including a few items here for a better variety of nutrition and a little morale, but to be honest, I carry just-add-water camp meals, 12 Cliff Bars and a couple of packs of beef jerky in my pack. They are lightweight and take up very little space and have a calorie punch with a little protein.
You can get by with little to no food for a lot longer than you think and these items will keep you going. If you find yourself with a little more room in your pack after you’ve met all of your needs, then a pack of some sort of fish, will provide you with some vital nutrition.
And of course, the coffee is purely for morale.

Rationing things out, especially in the beginning is a good idea, but you also want to function at a reasonably optimized level.
This should be on your mind when you’re deciding what type of food and how much of it you keep in your backcountry pack.

You can no longer look to food for comfort like you may normally do at home. This is where a good hot cup of coffee comes in handy.
Whether it’s sunrise, a boost in the middle of the day, or a well earned cup around the fire to celebrate the end of a long day and give you a little more energy to tell some stories before you pass out, coffee is a real morale booster.

ILLUMINATION:
When it comes to lighting the way, I like to have options. I like to have a backup for my backup. Always have a headlamp, at least one.
You should absolutely have the ability to go hands free here. There are too many situations where you are going to need both hands to perform tasks.
Besides a headlamp, I like to have a slender, sturdy, and high lumen flashlight in my pocket and also one in the pack.
I make sure that at least one of those flashlights has a strobe feature. In a self defense situation an intense strobe light can be used to stun an attacker and give you the upper hand in a conflict. It can also be used to alert someone if you need help.

We have “stressed the importance” of A LOT of things today, but socks are on the top of the list.
If you’ve ever been way out, with no choice but to walk if you’re going to get back, and have to do that with blisters on your feet, you will put it at the top of your list as well.
A good pair of socks are sometimes the difference between blisters or no blisters.

You don’t have to go all out on your rain gear. Just make sure you pack something of decent quality and also something that will roll up tight and nestle into a corner of, or at the bottom of your pack.

I personally like to have a lightweight and easily packed rain suit. But, if you’re the type that would rather roll with a poncho, make sure that it’s sturdy and designed for multi-functional use.

TOOLS:

The good news is that some of these items can be hauled on your body somewhere, either allowing you to save space in your bag for something else or double up on an important item.

Having a small durable saw can do anything from removing debris off of a roadway or essential path, to sawing up firewood, or to even saw up limbs big enough that, when combined with some good strong paracord, can make one HELL of a shelter if you had no choice but to hunker down for a day or three.

It can take wear and tear off of the body, act as a prop for a makeshift shelter, and also be used as a weapon or to keep distance between you and an attacker, whether two-legged or four-legged.

NAVIGATION
Here in these soft and modern times, it is all too easy to depend on the technology that fits right in the palm of our hands, and most people do.
What most people don’t do, and they should, is practice and understand compass and map reading. Old fashioned navigation of this type, paired with the knowledge of how to wield these tools, will not usually fail you.
Along with the navigational and communication tools below, obtain a good quality paper map of the area you will be trekking before you go and carry it with you along the way. If you can laminate it, even better.

FIRE:
Now, here’s one of the most important things that we can have the ability to produce when we need it that is also accompanied by a big “IT DEPENDS”.
A good campfire can be your best friend. It can keep you warm, fend off wildlife, and is also a simple morale booster. There’s nothing quite like it after a long day out, cooking food with friends/family or just contemplating quietly alone.
Just make sure you are not in danger of creating a wildfire if you are in an area prone to wildfires and the conditions are not favorable. This could be absolutely devastating for yourself and every living thing around you.
The anatomy of starting a fire is composed of two things. Ignition and fuel.
Understanding how to make fire and implementing that knowledge to be able to start a fire in not so perfect conditions is probably the most valuable skill you can have in a survival situation.
BIC Classic Lighter
Starting out with a no-brainer here. These days a sturdy well-made lighter is just about the easiest way to produce a constant flame.
Having one of these on you at all times is easy and shouldn’t even be a thought. I carry two everywhere I go. It’s just part of my routine to have these as my everyday carry (EDC).
Another great method of carrying a flame maker that will also withstand wind is to have a good Zippo Lighter. I would still carry a Bic at least for backup.
Zippos are reliable, but they do have some mechanisms that can break down and they tend to run out of fuel faster.
Ok, so we have our flame producer, our ignition. Now we need something to catch on and burn long enough to get the fire burning nice and hot.
Some situations may not be very conducive to the gathering of tinder or maybe even kindling for that matter.
You may be in an area where there just isn’t a lot of natural resources to choose from so you have to burn what you can find and the supply may be limited.
The Black Beard Fire Starter is just about the most amazing product for this. They have demonstrated that this stuff can be soaked in water and immediately taken right out and caught ablaze.
It’s tough stuff and it is small and lightweight and I believe it is just about as good as it gets for quick and easy fire starting!

CORDAGE:
Having a little cordage on you just in everyday life is a good idea. Cordage can come in handy in many more ways than most people think. Their are too many instances to list here, but everything from making a bow drill to tying down a Christmas tree to the top of your car are a couple of things that come to mind right off the bat.
Again, the more you know, the less you need. Take a little time to learn some of the most important and useful knots. This knowledge with some good cord can make life a little easier for you in times where you are so exhausted you can’t muster the energy to do much at all.

I’ve got to admit, I haven’t used this stuff, but with all of my experiences with regular 550 paracord, I would imagine this is a fantastic tool to have on hand.
Combine this with a small lightweight tarp and a few emergency blankets and you’ve got your shelter covered. A small tarp folds flat or rolls tight, and a these little mylar emergency blankets can stuff in the front pocket of your pants if you had to.
You can always go with the regular, inexpensive 550 paracord and obviously never go wrong. I ALWAYS carry at least 100 ft. in my pack and about 25 ft. in one of my pockets. It will come in handy in more ways than you know.
EYE PROTECTION:
Good eye protection, though not the most important item on our list today, should not be understated, nor its importance underestimated.
In the inland northwest, winters are commonly very sunny with a lot of snow on the ground. And, if you’re not accustomed to that, you may not know that this combination can induce almost migraine level headaches in easily less than an hour.
Also, protection from the wind and the things that the winter wind can whip up is very important when trying to keep your eyes steady, protected, and free of obstructing tears.
